WAMI Dome

A couple of years back I made the WAMI which is a simple digital wave modulation instrument, which really means that it can make a bunch of cool sounds by waving your hands over it. Last month I saw a blog post on it on MAKE zine. The WAMI Dome was a project commissioned by my friend Jim Heekin Jr. for his leisurely use =)

Jonah Brucker-Cohen Wrote a brief description of it on the Make Zine Blog.

Thanks for the shout out! =)

Fashion Camp at ITP

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

Today is the first gathering of Fashion Camp at ITP in 2009. There was a good turn out at the event, composed of designers, electronic geeks and people interested in fashion. This is definitely not at the level of Bryant Park yet. But this is going to get main stream sooner than later.

I went to a workshop titled “Soft Circuits” by Alicia Gibbs who got Bug Labs to sponsor some electronics to make a cool LED wearable circuit. This is the one I made with the help of Diana Eng:

Invisible Currents

Shark magnetic sensory system from wikipedia.

If we did not have sensitive nerves embedded all over our skin, we would not be able to feel the presence of wind. Similarly, if we don’t have electromagnetic sensors like a shark we cannot sense the presence of magnetic forces. This is an example of electromagnetic pulses that come from the subway system in Japan. This is just one example of simple way you can visualize the invisible forces of the world around you. Think wind!

Badger: You got to play it!

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Badger is a game based on social status and identity. Its sort of like the digital version of boy scout, but a lot more diverse. If you think you deserve a badge, summit proof and let the community vote on it. Collect enough badges and earn special privileges.

We will hopefully have the site fixed by next week, please excuse the mess =)

Efficiency is key in Transportation.

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Tesla Motors are making a lot of noise about their new car, the Tesla Model S Electric car. And so they should, its a nice car!

The company does not claim to be trying to save the world or to create a substitute to the combustion engine. What they are trying to do is build an electric car that has advanced performance, efficiency and design. Efficiency is the key word when it comes to transportation and general system design in general.

Lets use the Segway “PUMA” (above) as an example. The vehicle has a top speed of around 35 M.P.H. and a range of about 35 miles. At what point do you draw a line between comfort and a burden. At that point, why not just invest in a nice reliable bicycle with a range limited by your own personal energy and top speed of 82.3 M.P.H. (under special circumstances) and a casual leisurely speed of around 10-15 M.P.H. Not to mention the health benefits.

In the other hand, why not stick to gasoline and make hybrids that are super efficient? That is what Fiat is trying to accomplish according to President Obama. Which explains why GM will be merging with the Italian car company.

Its very interesting to ponder what the outcome of all these new initiatives will amount to in the coming years. I have a feeling that, collectively, we have only begun to realize that fossil fuels are like non-rechargeable batteries; once you use them, they are nothing but waste.

WAMI Dome at Electronic Social Club Exhibit.

WAMI

The WAMI Dome got some exposure at the Electronic Social Club’s Annual Exhibit at Hunter College. Everyone really enjoyed to play with the little dome and its square wave sounds.

This is a video of the dome in action:

Jason Krugman and I decided to make this quick installation to see if our vision of a light installation controlled by Jason’s “Light Chime” switch system.
The circuit worked like a charm. We are planning to let people play with it at this year’s Hunted House at ITP.

WAMI Dome

The new generation of WAMIs is in the works and functioning, its time to put the final touches on. I am very pleased with the sounds coming out of this bad boy. This WAMI definitely going to make some crazy beats.
And also I will put out the info aka DIY so you can make your own! =)
