The New Typography.

Monday, April 26th, 2010

When technology advances, art follows. Typography has been an art form that is in constant flux due to new advances in technology.

Whenever a new technology becomes available, type forms change to accommodate the technology. We began to see this in woodtype prints and leterpress machines where individual letters would be placed next to each other to form words.

Offset printing and Digital printing followed which made the whole process a lot more efficient and less time consuming.

The age of the computer lead to an explosion of typefaces including some that did not follow the traditional type design and some that adjusted to the new technology.

Mobile phones and laptops lead to a need for type that would be clearly displayed on the low resolutions screens. The solution was pixel typefaces.

The evolution of type took a turn to the opposite direction due to a desire to have more organic and expressive design in typefaces.

Sagmeister is one of many designers who began to experiment with type in unique ways.

In a way Sagmeister consciously rejected technology. Other artists and designers decided to embrace technology.

I few months back I wrote about Bio Art and since, I have seen many projects that could be added to the genera. A project that I find to be in the fore front of innovation came in the simple form of a magazine cover.

The cover of May’s edition of Creative Review is the letter “A” with what seems like a cool Photoshop effect. If you take a closer look, you will notice that it is actually a microscopic photograph of the letter etch in a metallic surface; which happens to be aluminum.

The beautiful images of the type where generated by the collaboration of Craig Ward and Frank Conrad.
Mr. Ward initially experimented with different materials such as plastics and various types of molds that would eventually serve as skeletons for pollen cells to grow.

The result is unique imagery that was created by experimenting with materials, technology and cellular forms to generate art.

As we keep innovating and technology become more accessible by artists and designers we will see more projects like these. We can even predict that one day we will even have robots that specialize in the display of type… oh wait, such a robot exists already thanks to fellow ITPer Rob Seward.

Technology has shifted the way that art and design are viewed. Creativity comes from new inspirations and we can expect to see more appropriation of these breakthroughs into our everyday life.

The Price of Innovation and Sharing.

Youtube Doubler

For a long time the business model of a lot of companies and individuals has been to come up with a great idea, then keep it to your self. This act of proprietary ownership of an idea is deprecated and will only take you so far in this new age of open-source and sharing.

It would not be as intimidating to compete against one group of individuals, but how about a whole town, maybe a city? Well the open-source movement is bigger. It is global.

So what should companies focus their attention on and where should they invest? The answer is, invest in people, invest in tools.

Lets take Youtube for example. They quickly became the worlds fastest growing entertainment(if you want to call it that) and broadcasting social venue and continue growing because they gave people the ability to play with their product for free! Now that they are the front runner, they are not about to let innovation slip in between their fingers. They are giving everyone more of what they want; entertainment and tools to make new things. It is a symbiotic relationship.

Since Youtube has allowed people to play with Youtube’s content. Artists and technologists have made innovation of their own. Examples of this includes inbflat.net which is a webpage where you can play a bunch of Youtube videos simultaneously.

The funny thing about this is that one of my friends had the idea to make this, not in the same manner but very close. I told him at the time that I was sure a hundred other people thought about the same thing and maybe a couple have already built it. And then I saw the proof that I was right. http://youtubedoubler.com/ is around 90% similar to my friends idea, there are a couple of things missing but it there, published, functioning, doing its thing.

This phenomenon is good for Youtube. Its free marketing and advertising for them. So what can they do to get bigger and more profitable? Keep people watching, using experimenting. But that is not all, they also need to change, stay ahead of the curve by making new additions to their offerings.

Youtube Direct will have a major impact on society and the Surveillance/Sousveillance trends.

Now Youtube is also working on the 3D technology which will be a huge market one the polarized LED monitors hit the market. You will be able to see 3d content by browsing the web! The technology is here and about to hit the market.

If you don’t have the 3D Monitors yet, you can use old school 3D red/blue glasses or the good old, cross eyed method to view stereoscopic images!

To find these experimental videos on youtube all you need to do is search for the tag
“yt3d:enable=true”
of these tags:
“yt3d:aspect=3:4″
“yt3d:swap=true”

The Power of Image Association

Technology has Allowed us to take video at very high speeds which open up a new world of events that where never seen before. For instance, this video compilation of bullets colliding with various materials, recorded by a camera at a claimed 1 million frames per second.

Ok so now that you have this new awesome technology what are you going to do with it? Research and Art!

this is a commercial that I though was really well done:

Here are some videos that I found very interesting.
The first are stop motion animations of bunnies which in my opinion are a very interesting since they are also quasi-public installations.

Shark magnetic sensory system from wikipedia.

If we did not have sensitive nerves embedded all over our skin, we would not be able to feel the presence of wind. Similarly, if we don’t have electromagnetic sensors like a shark we cannot sense the presence of magnetic forces. This is an example of electromagnetic pulses that come from the subway system in Japan. This is just one example of simple way you can visualize the invisible forces of the world around you. Think wind!

Pollution Galore in NYC.

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

I was riding around in my cousin’s SUV and felt guilty of doing so. Specially since I was coming from upstate NY where the air smelled fresh of trees and flowers. As soon as we crossed the Triborough Bridge bridge to enter brooklyn, the thick smog filled aroma invaded my lungs.
This is some video of what I saw:

And some images:

And not only that there have been sightings of some weird stuff, like radio active orange clouds of unusual shape. Some call it beautiful; I think they are too, like a mushroom cloud.

I hope this new Climate bill will change our behavior when it comes to consuming and creating waste.

Because seriously, my lungs are not going to be healthy if I bike to work every day for the rest of my life as I am doing now. Lets start cleaning our act people! We need clean air.
