Pianocktail Progress Report

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

We are making good progress in the Pianocktail. There are 2 more weeks left in the semester and about a month left to do in work. Thankfully we have around 10 or 20 coffee shops around NYU. Can’t wait to take the first sip out of a cocktail mixed by the Pianocktail.

While I write the code, Florica is wiring the circuit together.

As you may see in the pictures there are a bunch of wires that we have to deal with. For every input switch there is a wire and for every output switch there will be 4 wires. There will be 88 input signals and 48 output signals coming and going from the Arduino. This means we have to connect over 280 wires!

What all this means is that we have a lot of wiring to do! Lucky Florica is on it. Oh and did I mention we are re-painting the piano and still need to add the liquid dispensing mechanism?

Playing around with AJAX

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

These are some of the tweens and actions that I am playing around with.
Hopefully soon I will be able to use what I learned from my play time and translate it into something useful.

I am using a library from mootools to help me with the tweening in javascript. I could code everything from scratch, but it seems that it would be a waste of time since I’m going to use simple tweens. One thing that I learned from programming in flash ActionScript 2 or actionScript 3 is that coding things from scratch is great and feels good, but it takes a long time to do.

This is why I don’t feel too bad about using mootools. Its more efficient and I need to save, as much time as possible. Specially since the Winter Show at ITP is a few weeks away!

in the mean time, enjoy the kittens.

Messing with Google Maps.

I made this Silly Smiley face using Google Map API:

Surprisingly, Google made it really easy for people to use their maps and re-purpose the information to be used for something else. Its nothing new but its Cool stuff!

Live Streaming Video on the Web

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

The dawn of do it your self live streaming is upon us. Although it may be video feeds of cute puppies sleeping and squirrels in Alaska feeding, is going to be the next YouTube.

Soon the link between cell phones and live streaming video will be made. When this crucial step occurs, there will be an explosion of ephemeral live video content streamed onto the web. Soon you will have the ability to see what you are friends are doing with out the weird feeling that you are invading their privacy. Why is it not an invasion of privacy? because they are voluntarily allowing the world to see what it is that they are doing. The concept is similar to flickr, facebook and twitter. You upload your video stream and people on the web or their cellphones watch. Okay so maybe it is a little freaky and awkward to see what people are doing with out them knowing that you are watching, but this is the new reality of our society and you can only expect this sousveillance trend to continue to grow. Its a soft form of voyeurism which gives a lot of curious people a reason to look at what others are doing.

Death of a Turkey!

Friday, November 21st, 2008

This interview with Sarah Palin makes me feel like a hypocrite.

At first I was really disgusted by Palin talking in front of a turkey slaughter house. When I thought about it for a minute, I concluded that these turkeys are being treated ten times better than the turkeys poultry, beef or pork that you buy at the supermarket. The truth is that people need to eat and farms need to produce food. Food means killing innocent animals in ways that may seem cruel and are cruel in fact. This is where that crunchy feeling of hypocrisy comes in because I will be savoring that poor, defenseless creature when it is sitting on top of my mom’s kitchen table.

The paradox of humanity. No animal gets spared.

Happy Thanksgiving! (sigh)

Fake New York Times?

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

This impostor New York Times paper is definitely fake, but if you look at the date closely you will see its dated for July 4th 2009 (or a couple of days from when it was distributed). The purpose of the project was to give you a glimpse at what things could be like if we organized our selves to do what we think is right!

WAMI Dome at Electronic Social Club Exhibit.

Monday, November 17th, 2008

The WAMI Dome got some exposure at the Electronic Social Club’s Annual Exhibit at Hunter College. Everyone really enjoyed to play with the little dome and its square wave sounds.

This is a video of the dome in action:
